Saybrook Alumna Margo Maine, PhD '85 Publishes New Book on the Treatment of Eating Disorders

Treatment of Eating Disorders: Bridging the Research-Practice Gap
Margo Maine

Available at www.Amazon.com

From Alumna Margo Maine, PhD '85:

Dear Friends - The book that has been my "extra" project of the last 2 years was just released. It is an edited volume and a great contribution to the field as my co-editors and the writers are dedicated and innovative experts and leaders in the field. As is the case for many fields, the gap between what eating disorder research examines and what clinicians and patients face each day is enormous. The book intends to bring the two together, so each can inform the other and we can do a better job, decreasing the pain and suffering these deadly disorders can cause.

This is geared to training mental health professionals and graduate students, so not something to buy for your coffee table- I just wanted to let you know it's done so I won't be complaining so much about it....

Please pass it along to anyone who might be interested.

And enjoy the end of summer-

Margo

Alumna Darlene Viggiano, PhD ' 10 Publishes a Workbook on Lost Pregnancies

Darlene Viggiano, (MFT) PhD '06 Releases New Publication

Carrying On: A Workbook for Women Who've Lost a Pregnancy Paperback

Available at Amazon.com

According to the American Pregnancy Association, 15-20% of pregnancies miscarry, and risks increase beyond age 35. This workbook offers evocative questions to help women recover emotionally, encompassing a wide array of grief issues. It is designed for women, therapists, and organizations whose goal is to heal the painful wound of miscarriage. Written by a therapist who herself recovered from gestational loss, Carrying On can facilitate healing in self-help, individual therapy, or group settings. It helps readers * see the similarity of the writer's story and their own experiences * identify emotions and shared dynamics * write their personal stories * review and witness their growth. Carrying On is a forward-looking, flexible, multi-dimensional resource that stimulates expression of thoughts, feelings, memories, and expectations. Journaling is a time-tested recovery tool. Its unique perspective helps break through stuck points that can blight acceptance and moving forward. Practical advice that guides readers step-by-step through recovery, acceptance, and carrying on makes the workbook eminently useful from a psychological and self-help standpoint.

Following is my abstract and information:

Desire for Higher Education in First-Generation Hispanic College Students

by Tamara Olive

Empirical studies have examined first-generation college students, individuals whose parents have not attended college. Their academic preparation, cognitive development, personality characteristics, and first-year performance have been topics of research. However, there appears to be little in the literature exploring the motivation of these individuals to seek higher education. This study examines the desire to attend college among first-generation Hispanic students enrolled in a post-baccalaureate achievement program designed to increase the attainment of terminal degrees by students from underrepresented segments of society. The descriptive phenomenological research method (Giorgi, 1985) was employed with participants in a Texas university designated as a Hispanic-serving institution. The results of this research identify the roles of resilience, previous success, awakened awareness, comfort in the academic environment, a need to contribute to others or to society, a break with tradition, a process of self-discovery, and the influence of valued individuals in facilitating a desire for higher education.

Stream: Education and Social Welfare

Presentation Type: 30 minute Paper Presentation in English

Dr. Tamara Olive
Assistant Professor, Department of Education, Sul Ross State University
Alpine, Texas, USA

She earned a Ph.D. in psychology from Saybrook Graduate School in San Francisco, California, and currently maintains a part-time private counseling practice in San Angelo, Texas. She is a licensed professional counselor, a nationally certified counselor, and a certified school counselor. She has worked as a clinical counselor and academic advisor in higher education settings. Her research interests include the desire for higher education in first-generation college students and the efficacy of humanistic approaches with foster children in the clinical environment.

From Marie Fonrose, PhD '03 - An Update On Haiti

Update from Marie Fonrose—Haiti

Six months after the earthquake, I know many of you are asking the questions: what has changed? Is Haiti better? These questions are not easy to answer. What I can say, however, is that life goes on. In comparison to when I went in February, the people look and feel better. Some of the children are back in school. The adults are trying to find something to do to provide for their families. Haitians are very resilient; they move on quickly. They know that having a pity party will not make things better. The 35 seconds that destroyed the country and changed a lifetime will have an impact for many generations. As the people move on, we need to continue to pray and help them find stability. It may have taken 35 seconds to happen, but it will require patience and years to fix. I know you will continue to be part of the reconstruction efforts in whatever way you can—together we will revive Haiti.

Encyclopedia of Wellness Seeks Writers for Unassigned Entries

The 3-volume Encyclopedia of Wellness is scheduled to be published by ABC-CLIO in late 2011. As editor and a contributing writer I am seeking writers for remaining unassigned entries.

The goal of the 3-volume set is to provide basic information about key terms and concepts in human health and wellness. Those terms and concepts include food, nutrition, diet, and exercise along with preventative choices to avoid disease, alternative medicine, the importance of the mind-body connection, details about medical insurance, and changes to the U.S. healthcare system.

Candidates must be willing to write entries totaling at least 2,000 words. Preference will be given to published writers, advanced graduate students, and knowledgeable professionals in the field of health, but others qualified to write about health and wellness will also be considered. Deadlines for submission will begin September 1, 2010, and will include January 1, 2011 and May 1, 2011 for more complex or lengthy assignments.

The deadlines are important, so please do not respond to this call unless you are confident in your ability to meet an assigned deadline of 2,000 words or a group of entries totaling that number by your assigned date. Compensation for accepted entries will begin with the 3-volume set of the encyclopedia, which will be sent to contributors at publication. Other forms of compensation will be considered based on experience and length of assignment and will also be available at publication.

If you are interested in writing for this reference set, please send a short biographical sketch describing your background and interests in health and wellness and your preferred email and postal address via email to: skzoumb@gmail.com.
