Dear Friends - The book that has been my "extra" project of the last 2 years was just released. It is an edited volume and a great contribution to the field as my co-editors and the writers are dedicated and innovative experts and leaders in the field. As is the case for many fields, the gap between what eating disorder research examines and what clinicians and patients face each day is enormous. The book intends to bring the two together, so each can inform the other and we can do a better job, decreasing the pain and suffering these deadly disorders can cause.

This is geared to training mental health professionals and graduate students, so not something to buy for your coffee table- I just wanted to let you know it's done so I won't be complaining so much about it....

Assistant Professor (Peace and Conflict Studies)

The Faculty of Graduate Studies invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor position in the Peace and Conflict Studies (PACS) program, with a starting date of July 1, 2010 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The Program is particularly interested in a candidate whose scholarship has clear relevance to practice and who has theory-guided practice experience in the PACS field. The candidate¹s research, practice, and teaching interests should include a focus on the theme of gender and conflict or indigenous peacemaking. The candidate will participate fully in the Arthur V. Mauro Centre¹s mission of analyzing and helping to resolve serious social conflicts.

The candidate will manage outreach activities, seminars, lectures, conferences and public events, and will work to establish contacts and build cooperation with community agencies.

The successful candidate should: 1) be well versed in the PACS field; 2) be proficient in the theory and practice of PACS; 3) be prepared to teach graduate courses in peace building and social justice, international human rights and human security, gender and conflict, restorative justice or indigenous peacemaking among others; 4) have the ability to attract, supervise, and mentor graduate students; 5) have a strong externally-funded research and practice program or the demonstrated ability to develop same; 6) take a leadership role in developing academic and outreach programs of the Mauro Centre to advance the interdisciplinary PACS field; 7) possess excellent communication and leadership skills, and 8) be committed to working in a team environment.

A demonstrated record of effective teaching in PACS as well as experience in teaching and advising graduate students at the Master's, and Ph.D. levels in PACS is desirable. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in PACS, Conflict Analysis and Resolution, Peace Studies, or in a related discipline. The PACS M.A. program is one of a number of interdisciplinary programs administered directly by the Faculty of Graduate Studies. The Arthur Mauro Centre for Peace and Justice is housed in St. Paul¹s College. The PACS Ph.D. program currently has two core faculty and over forty-eight academic staff affiliates. The University of Manitoba encourages applications from qualified women and men, including members of visible minorities, Aboriginal peoples, and persons with disabilities. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority. Tamara's paper has been published in Volume 5, Number 1, 2010 of the The International Journal of Interdisciplinary Social Sciences, a fully refereed academic Journal.

Update from Marie Fonrose—Haiti

Six months after the earthquake, I know many of you are asking the questions: what has changed? Is Haiti better? These questions are not easy to answer. What I can say, however, is that life goes on. In comparison to when I went in February, the people look and feel better. Some of the children are back in school. The adults are trying to find something to do to provide for their families. Haitians are very resilient; they move on quickly. They know that having a pity party will not make things better. The 35 seconds that destroyed the country and changed a lifetime will have an impact for many generations. As the people move on, we need to continue to pray and help them find stability. It may have taken 35 seconds to happen, but it will require patience and years to fix. I know you will continue to be part of the reconstruction efforts in whatever way you can—together we will revive Haiti.

The 3-volume Encyclopedia of Wellness is scheduled to be published by ABC-CLIO in late 2011. As editor and a contributing writer I am seeking writers for remaining unassigned entries.

The goal of the 3-volume set is to provide basic information about key terms and concepts in human health and wellness. Those terms and concepts include food, nutrition, diet, and exercise along with preventative choices to avoid disease, alternative medicine, the importance of the mind-body connection, details about medical insurance, and changes to the U.S. healthcare system.

Candidates must be willing to write entries totaling at least 2,000 words. Preference will be given to published writers, advanced graduate students, and knowledgeable professionals in the field of health, but others qualified to write about health and wellness will also be considered. Deadlines for submission will begin September 1, 2010, and will include January 1, 2011 and May 1, 2011 for more complex or lengthy assignments.

The deadlines are important, so please do not respond to this call unless you are confident in your ability to meet an assigned deadline of 2,000 words or a group of entries totaling that number by your assigned date. Compensation for accepted entries will begin with the 3-volume set of the encyclopedia, which will be sent to contributors at publication. Other forms of compensation will be considered based on experience and length of assignment and will also be available at publication.
